2003 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Also new are enhanced interior features and child seats that are easier to install. Power adjustable pedals are now available for all models.  jeep built its reputation by building the genuine article, the real deal. Jeep vehicles offer serious off-road capability to match their tough looks. The luxuriously appointed grand cherokee along with the nimble wrangler are the basis for jeep's reputation for off-road prowess.  the grand cherokee can prowl canyons and crevasses, negotiate steep slopes, and slog through slippery mud. In 2002, jeep released the flagship overland model, which combines plush suede leather seat inserts with a full complement of off-road equipment, including skid plates, a raised suspension and limited-slip axles.  . lineupthree models comprise the jeep grand cherokee line: laredo 25,665); limited 30,510); and overland 37,070). However, it does add $1970 to the price of a laredo, and $2430 to the limited. It develops 235 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission.  a high-output version of the 4. 7-liter v8, with 265 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, is standard on overland and optional on limited. Manually selecting the low range locks the center differential for maximum traction. A low range is standard on limited, optional on laredo; and limited-slip axles are available.  overland models use jeep's quadra-drive, optional on limited 550). Quadra-drive combines the quadra-trac ii transfer case with vari-lock axles, which use hydromechanical torque-transfer couplings between the wheels. Jeep claims the quadra-drive system can send nearly 100 percent of engine torque to a single wheel when necessary.  also standard on overland is the up-country suspension group 435 on laredo, $290 on limited), which includes heavy-duty springs and gas-pressurized shock absorbers, skid plates and p235/65r17 all-terrain tires.  for 2003, the overland comes with satin-silver aluminum wheels and metallic-painted side rock rails. Ceiling-mounted side-curtain air bags are standard.  laredo comes with a high level of luxury equipment, including a six-speaker infinity sound system with cd player, six-way power driver seat, tilt steering, and every imaginable power accessory. Limited adds automatic dual-zone climate control, steering-wheel audio controls, fog lights, universal garage door opener, heated mirrors, a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat, a memory function for the driver's seat and mirrors, and leather upholstery. From its jailhouse grille to its squared-off wheel openings, there's no mistaking the grand cherokee for anything but a jeep.  short overhangs contribute to its off-road capability, and to its pulled-taught styling as well. Slightly rounded edges and a subtle bulge in the roofline modernize, but do not detract from, a design heritage traceable to the 1941 original.  . interiorsafety has improved for 2003 with optional ceiling-mounted side-curtain air bags, which provide head protection for front- and rear-seat occupants. Latch child-seat anchors are standard. New rain-sensing wipers are standard on overland, optional on limited models.  we found the grand cherokee's front seats comfortable, with thickly padded longitudinal ribs. They seem a bit cushy for serious off-road driving, however. The pedals move with the memory seats and mirrors, a boon to folks who are significantly taller or shorter than their significant other. It's a more pleasing look than the conventional setup, where the pointers and numerals are lighted against a darker background.  it's hard to tell at a glance, but the overland's redwood burl trim is real wood. Similarly, its wood-and-leather steering wheel isn't as plush or thick as that of a jaguar, but its does have remote stereo switches on the front of its horizontal spokes. Climbing into the back seats is relatively easy (compared with the land rover discovery, for example), thanks to generously wide doors.  the rear tire lies under the floor, which allows more space for cargo at the expense of a high liftover at the tailgate.  . driving impressionjeep has refined the grand cherokee for 2003. New brake calipers and a high-output master cylinder reduce braking effort. The steering has been recalibrated for lower effort. Reduced-pressure shock absorbers enhance the grand cherokee's on-pavement ride.  jeep's high-output 4. 7-liter v8 is lively, and its 30-horsepower advantage over the standard 4. 7-liter v8 is noticeable. This engine provides the grand cherokee with smooth acceleration performance, and it sounds refined. It produces 265 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 325 pound-feet of torque at 3600, compared with the standard 4. 7-liter v8's 235 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 295 pounds-feet of torque at 3200 rpm. In other words, it produces more power, but revs higher to do it. Most of the power increase comes from a higher compression ratio (9. 7:1 vs. 9. 3), so the high-output engine requires premium fuel.  the five-speed automatic transmission that comes standard with the v8 engines shifts unobtrusively. It makes hurrying up a mountain or passing slow-moving trucks a breeze. It has two overdrive gears, so in fifth gear the engine is only turning 2000 revs while cruising at 70 mph. No more than five gears, however, are used in sequence.  the grand cherokee seems sluggish off the line at first, but this is partly due to the throttle's long pedal travel. Experienced off-road drivers prefer a longer pedal travel for precise manipulation of the throttle in tricky situations. Deliberate mashing of the throttle brings a quick launch, quicker than in most other suvs in this class. That's due in part to the relative lightweight of the jeep, whose figure is kept trim by its unit-body construction. This unusual design strategy, also used by the nissan pathfinder and mitsubishi montero, results in a platform that is lighter and more rigid than traditional truck-based designs that are built on a frame. The jeep feels faster and more responsive than most v8 suvs, especially the huge tahoe and expedition.  a surprisingly tight turning circle adds to the jeep's spirited, nimble feel. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, it feels controlled and steady. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the g. 2000 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It just keeps going and going and going. introductionwhen we're all old and gray they're still going to be selling these things. Jeep cherokee is a case study in how long a solid design can remain viable, even when some of its elements have become dated. Cherokees sprouted in suburban driveways like mushrooms. Jeep sold more than 165,000 cherokees in 1999 - more than what it sold the year before. The reason: it's tough as nails and starts at less than $17,000. Se comes with wind-up windows and vinyl upholstery. Air conditioning is optional.  sport models add the new 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine along with premium cloth. Sport models come packaged with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, a tilt steering column and a rear wiper washer. Classic adds a higher level of trim and nicer cloth.  limited models come with leather upholstery and other features. And in international markets, as well. Square, tough and durable.  the cherokee was the first unitbody sport-utility vehicle, as distinct from the traditional body-on-frame approach. There are two levels of 4wd available for the cherokee, part-time command-trac and full-time selec-trac. interiorcherokee's interior shows its age and comes up a little short in the comfort department. It was hard to perceive its interior as cramped or awkward, because by the standards of the day they weren't. Times have changed, however. Suvs have become luxurious station wagons. Without a major redesign, the cherokee hasn't kept up with that trend. Newer entries place a high priority on comfort. Compared to them, the cherokee measures up as pretty snug, particularly in the rear seat.  it's also uncomfortable for the driver. Adjust as we might we were never quite able to achieve an ideal driving position. Cherokee's limited front seat travel left us sitting closer than we wanted to be, and reaching up for the wheel rim. The primary instruments are a bit small, but the secondary array is a little more comprehensive than average, including an ammeter and oil pressure gauge.  it's possible to load the cherokee with comfort and convenience features, including a good sound system with cassette and cd players, air conditioning, power driver's seat, an overhead digital info center and two digital clocks. All of this stuff makes the going more pleasant, but we'd trade most of it for better seats. In fact, we suspect some people would dismiss the cherokee as choppy on this score, and mark it down to a relatively short wheelbase. That would be true -- as far as it goes. However, this is not an explorer, a sport-utility vehicle designed for people who see this breed as trendy station wagons. The combination of good ground clearance, short wheelbase and a favorable power-to-weight ratio make this boxy little veteran a tiger in the woods. As always, we'd prefer a manual transmission.  power notwithstanding, the cherokee's optional six-cylinder engine feels a little primitive compared to most of the v6 engines offered by jeep's competitors. An inline-6 is supposed to be an ideal design for smooth operation, but jeep's version generates noticeable vibration through most of its operating range. It's also surprisingly quick with the six-cylinder engine.  lack of caution in the option shopping process can escalate its price beyond reason; $27,000 seems like a lot to spend on one of these. And at that price, even with its limitations, the jeep cherokee still stacks up as a good buy. model lineup4-door 4wd: se 19,230); sport 21,570); classic 23,040); limited 25,365)4-door 2wd: se 17,720); sport 20,060); classic 21,525); limited 23,245)2-door: 4wd se 18,195); 4wd sport 20,535); 2wd se 16,680); 2wd sport 19,025). assembled intoledo, ohio. options as testedam/fm/cd/cassette with graphic equalizer 410); infinity premium speakers 350); up country suspension group 725) includes heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks, deletes standard rear stabilizer bar, skid plate group (transfer case, fuel tank, front suspension skid plates), trak-lok differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, full-size spare tire, tow hooks. model testedcherokee sport 4wd 4-door 25,365). 1998 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Subtle changes for the most popular suv. introductionthere seems to be an unending stream of sport-utilities hitting showrooms. But none have come close to the popularity of ford's explorer.  it has been so successful that there has been little inducement to change it. However, there are some improvements for 1998. The standard abs has been massaged to improve control on slippery surfaces, with reduced noise and vibration when activated. The rack-and-pinion steering system has been refined for better on-center feel and quicker response. The normal mode is auto. This mode continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels; this mode is primarily for driving off road or in extreme winter conditions. Choices start with a 4. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 160 horsepower. Next up is a 4. 0-liter single overhead-cam v6 with 205 hp. And finally, the big 5. 0-liter v8 makes 215 hp.  explorer permutations are numerable. All told, in ascending order of trim and price, there is explorer xl, sport, xlt, eddie bauer and limited. Deciding to buy an explorer is not too difficult. Deciding which explorer with which engine and which transmission could take an afternoon of brochure browsing. walkaroundbefore there was explorer, there was jeep cherokee with its straight lines and sharp edges. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues. The distinctive, and large, grille opening is flanked by wraparound headlights. There's a slot for air in the bumper, and an air scoop below. The p235/75r15 tires are mounted on cast aluminum wheels.  the front suspension is independent, using ford's recently introduced short- and long-arm design. At the rear--a vestige of its truck heritage--is a two-leaf variable rate spring for each wheel. Disc brakes are used all around and abs is standard, features that give the explorer an edge over many of its competitors.  the major exterior change for 1998 is a new liftgate. The glass-release handle is larger and the window is larger. The taillamps, license plate attachments, the high stop light and name badges are new.  we liked the new rear liftgate a lot. There is a simple t-handle marked 'gate' on one side, 'window' on the other. Turn toward 'gate' and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks up and well out of the way. Turn the handle toward 'window' and the glass can be raised by itself. Another feature we liked is a convenient interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel-well for operating the door locks when standing at the back of the vehicle. Privacy glass is part of the xlt package and more lightly tinted glass is standard on all models. interiorthis is a sport-utility truck, so there is some climbing to be done getting in. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panel top marks. Floor consoles have been redesigned. Higher trim levels boast rear cupholders and a storage bin. The optional moon roof has a one-touch-open feature.  seating is a big plus. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with an attractive, subdued pattern. It is, as mentioned, easy to get in and out of it. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the large b- and c- roof pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped to make sport-utilities and pickup trucks so popular.  however, the explorer doesn't really feel like a truck on the road. Well, maybe a little--but only a little. While the ride is far from bouncy and sharp, it is more springy than any sedan, and the reason has to be those antique leaf springs in the rear. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from trucks. Firm but comfortable, with a strong sense of control.  we were a little surprised at the level of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range in what otherwise is a solid, well-built vehicle.  also, the new v6 becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration. That's common for sport-utility vehicles, however, and ford's v6 engine is smooth and quiet in normal operation.  we were pleasantly surprised by the straight-line performance those 205 horses provided. Nevertheless, it launched with enthusiasm and maintained that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard overhead-valve engine, the overhead-cam version is a whole order of magnitude better. We recommend it strongly.  at moderate speed on a favorite section of twisty bits, the explorer was quite good: no lean in turns, the steering was exceptionally quick and precise, no wander in a straight line and on the narrow road did not give the impression it was about to shoulder oncoming traffic into the ditch. It simply does not drive large. summarythe explorer continues to be the best-selling sport-utility vehicle in the country. It isn't necessarily the best suv in the country, at least if real off-road capability is a factor. Modest ground clearance and a long wheelbase limit its usefulness in rough country. What seems to keep the explorer on top is its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, good looks and its overall reputation as the leader. And it's not the least expensive, by any means. But for the kind of all-around uses most families find for their sport-utilities, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst. 1998 honda accord review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This may be the best mid-size car in america. introductionalmost every time honda redesigns a car it steps to the head of the line in automotive greatness-at least for awhile. We think this is true of the all-new honda accord. Completely redesigned for 1998, this is the sixth generation of this popular car and it appears to have established a new benchmark for midsize sedans-a post most recently occupied by its arch-rival, the toyota camry. Honda says it has made more changes to this new accord than any other model in its 22-year history.  like the previous model, the accord does everything well. Even more impressive, it's a much better car than the previous model. Reliability should not be an issue. It is, after all, a honda. And it's honda's most important car. It's easy to drive and every aspect of it is user friendly. Obviously, those brilliant honda engineers have once again done their homework. walkaroundthe body of the 1998 accord is completely new. Sharp edges and rounded corners lend an understated, refined look, while an aggressive stance gives it the air of a european sedan. The accord coupe shares all the wonderfulness of the new sedan, but boasts unique styling and some performance tweaks designed to make it more fun to drive. While the previous accord coupe looked like a two-door version of the sedan, honda designed the 1998 model to have its own identity. Only the headlights and door handles are shared with the sedan. Indeed, the coupe is a handsome car, and a good choice for busy executives who want something practical and sporty.  but we're here to talk about the accord sedan, which comes in five models. The dx, lx and ex come equipped with 4-cylinder engines, while the lx v-6 and ex v-6 models are powered by a new 200-horsepower, aluminum alloy, 3. 0-liter v6. The 3. 0-liter engine replaces the previous 2. 7-liter powerplant. Equipped with honda's variable valve timing and valve lift electronic control, or vtec, system, the 60-degree v6 is tuned to deliver optimum torque over a broad rpm range. It's so smooth and so quiet that sometimes a glance at the tachometer is required to confirm that it's running. It provides lots of power for merging into traffic or entertaining its driver.  lest anyone fear an inferiority complex, the 2. 3-liter vtec inline-4 is a complete redesign as well. It produces more power, less vibration and better fuel efficiency than its predecessor. It's so clean that the accord ex with an automatic transmission meets california's demanding ultra-low emission vehicle, or ulev, standards. Generating 150 hp at 5700 rpm, an accord equipped with this engine is by no means a penalty box. An accord equipped with one of these 4-cylinder engines is a great package that deserves consideration by anyone shopping for a roomy mid-size car that excels in quality, durability, reliability, smoothness, ride quality, practicality and fuel efficiency. Did we leave anything out?  a fantastic new chassis comes with a new five-link double-wishbone rear suspension and a redesigned double-wishbone front suspension. Structural rigidity is significantly improved over the previous model for better handling and ride. interiorhonda used airline business-class seating as a model for the accord interior and it's a marvel of space efficiency. Amazingly, the new interior is substantially roomier than last year's edition, but the exterior is just slightly larger. The front seats are wider and more comfortable than before, but the big news is in back where there's substantially more room for rear seat passengers. This makes the new accord a true midsize sedan, whereas before it was considered a big compact.  bigger front and rear door openings make it easier to get in and out of the car. It's also easier to load cargo because the trunk opening is bigger. A new instrument panel features a two-tone finish with big gauges that are easy to read. Gone finally are the little silver metal switches that have locked doors for millions of honda products, replaced with more aesthetically appealing plastic ones that match the interior.  features associated with luxury cars abound, particularly on the high-level models. Sun visors offer sliding extensions, a homelink remote control system can be programmed to open garage doors, turn on house lights and turn off security systems. The air conditioning system, redesigned to reduce cool-down times by 30 percent, uses an air filtration system to keep pollen out and reduce diesel fumes from buses and trucks. driving impressionwe spent a day driving the various trim levels of both the accord sedan and the new coupe through ohio's cuyahoga valley and came away impressed with all of them. At one point, we staged an informal back-to-back test of the accord ex v-6, toyota camry, chevrolet malibu and ford taurus. Blasting up and down a rough, knarly little backroad, we explored the limits of handling, power and braking. The camry offered superb damping over the ripply pavement and the malibu surprised us with its handling prowess. By comparison, the taurus seemed out of its element, heavy and ponderous. The accord provided the sharpest transient response when turning left, then right, then left again, and it had the best brakes. The overriding impression was that the accord seemed lighter on its feet and inspired more confidence than the other cars.  two months later, we spent a week driving an accord ex v-6 in maryland. The more time we spent with this car, the more we were impressed with its competence. Ripples and potholes are smoothed out by the well-damped suspension, yet corners can be taken with confidence without any of the yawing and pitching that can shake confidence at higher speeds.  in cruise city, the v6 engine just purrs along, barely audible. Stomp on the throttle and the vtec cam setup growls with authority and quickly rockets the car into scofflaw county. We like both of those places and the accord is a great car for traveling between them. summaryhonda's new accord sets the new standard for mid-size sedans. It's at or near the top of its class in every measure of a great family sedan. To those ingredients are added honda's reputation for quality, durability and reliability.  not surprisingly, the new accord is already popular and honda's sales increased substantially after it was introduced. Don't look for exclusivity here, because honda sells more than 375,000 accords a year in the u. And don't expect bargain prices because this vote of confidence puts dealers in the driver's seat.  even so, those who buy the 1998 honda accord should enjoy many years of pleasant, trouble-free motoring. And those are important qualities for great family sedans. assembled inmarysville, ohio. model testedex v-6. Tachometer✔ Air Conditioning
